SPECTRUM F.A.Q.

This page supplements the exhibition prospectus.
Please refer to the prospectus for all basic requirements/fees.

The premise of SPECTRUM is to promote original, contemporary art, wrought by hand.

Spectrum is a juried exhibition open to all artists, amateur or professional, in all media except photography.  Original work only, completed within the past two years and not previously exhibited at the Carriage Barn.  No reproductions are accepted.  NCSA reserves to right to decline work deemed unduly fragile and/or potentially dangerous.

SIZE Requirements

2-D – 50" is the optimal maximum horizontal measurement, 72" is the optimal maximum vertical measurement.  However, if you have work larger than this in either dimension, please contact NCSA to discuss.

3-D – see Sculpture below.

FRAMING Requirements

Work, framed or unframed, must be securely WIRED FOR HANGING.  Brackets, short hooks and loops DO NOT fit on the gallery hanging system.

Framing, particularly under glass or plexi, offers a degree of protection to work in/on fragile media -- i.e. paper (including mats).  Because of the number of pieces received and the number of times work is handled in the course of a juried exhibition, framing is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED to safeguard artwork, especially works on paper.

Work on stretched canvas (or equivalent) does NOT have to be framed, but must be wired securely.

There is NO requirement for frame color, material, contour, glass or plexi.

Please note:  Clip frames with exposed glass edges are difficult to protect and cannot be guaranteed.  If you use such a frame and it chips or breaks, NCSA will not pay for replacement.

Further questions? Please contact NCSA.

SCULPTURE

Please note that you must provide felt, cork, rubber, or other "feet" for any sculpture if you wish to use the NCSA pedestals (12 x 12 x 38 (or 43) inches, charcoal lacquer finish).  If you provide your own pedestal, it must be clean, well maintained, secure, and easily moveable.  NCSA reserves the right to reject pedestals provided by artists.

DIGITAL IMAGES

We live in interesting times with a variety of new tools available to artists.  The computer is such a tool and, therefore, digital work – to the degree the ELEMENT of the ARTIST'S HAND is evident – IS accepted.  Drawing with a mouse is still drawing.

While photography is not accepted, work that INCORPORATES photographs IS accepted if some element of handwork is indicated.  Collaging scanned or downloaded photos digitally does NOT seem to have the requisite element of handwork.  Collaging by HAND is an alternative.  The addition of further handwork – drawing, painting, etc., either digitally or physically on the final print, would even more clearly define the requisite element of the hand of the artist.  Please note that work of this sort falls into a "gray area" of work that would also be accepted in the juried photography show.  If you work in this method, please consider entering work in both shows, and enhance the hand element for SPECTRUM.

Note on digital prints:  Giclee prints that reproduce work from other media are NOT accepted.  Giclee (or Iris or other digital print formats) of original digital "hand" work ARE accepted.  If you are unsure whether or not certain work is acceptable, please contact NCSA.
