JUROR: Paul Fusco is a member of Magnum Photos, the international photographic co-operative. After working as a photographer with the United States Army Signal Corps in Korea from 1951 to 1953, he received a BFA in photojournalism at Ohio University in 1957. He then moved to New York City and started his career as a staff photographer with Look, where he remained until the magazine closed in 1971. For Look, Fusco produced important reportages on social issues in the US, including the plight of destitute miners in Kentucky; Latino ghetto life in New York City; cultural experimentation in California; African-American life in the Mississippi delta; religious proselytizing in the South; and migrant laborers. He also worked in England, Israel, Egypt, Japan, Southeast Asia, Brazil, Chile and Mexico, and made an extended study of the Iron Curtain countries. Among his latest subjects are people living with AIDS in California, homelessness and the welfare system in New York, and the Zapatista uprising in the Mexican state of Chiapas. He has also worked on a long-term project documenting Belarussian children and adults sickened by radioactive fallout from the Chernobyl explosion. Fusco joined Magnum Photos as an Associate Member in 1973 and became a full member in 1974. He has had seven books of his photographs published, including “Chernobyl Legacy” (2001) and “RFK Funeral Train” (2000). His photography has been published widely in major US magazines including Time, Life, Newsweek, the New York Times Magazine, Mother Jones and Psychology Today, as well as in other publications worldwide. ABOUT MAGNUM PHOTOS: Magnum Photos comprises a diverse group of photographers working to “chronicle the world and interpret its peoples, events, issues and personalities,” according to the group’s website. Founded in Paris in 1947 by celebrated photographers Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger and David Seymour, Magnum reflects their “independent natures as both people and photographers - the idiosyncratic mix of reporter and artist that continues to define Magnum, emphasizing not only what is seen but also the way one sees it.” Many of the most iconic images of the past 60 years are by Magnum’s documentary photographers. The Magnum Photos Library is updated daily with new work from across the globe “covering industry, society and people, places of interest, politics and news events, disasters and conflict.” Through editorial offices in New York, London, Paris, and Tokyo and 15 sub-agents, Magnum Photos supplies images to press, publishers, advertising, TV, galleries and museums worldwide.
