It must be fate…

Fire destroyed the Art/Place gallery in Southport in the early morning hours of January 4th – two days before Don Axleroad’s new exhibition of prints and paintings was scheduled to open.  Firefighters were able to salvage 38 of 40 works, slightly singed, water-warped and reeking of smoke.

In a remarkable coincidence the Carriage Barn gallery seemed destined to stand empty for the entire month of January when an elementary school art exhibition did not materialize.  Don has been a member artist for several years, garnering top prizes in several Spectrum shows with his powerful woodcuts.  In fact, we have been discussing a mythology invitational to be held at the Barn sometime soon.  With Don’s phone call Friday morning to relay the shocking news, soon is now. There was no question that the gallery would step up to help a member artist and another local arts organization. The fact that Don had arranged such an important
Alzheimer’s information program on January 27th in conjunction with the exhibition was all the more compelling.

So here is a fascinating show exploring mythology ancient and modern -- a show that has quite literally risen from the ashes like the Phoenix.  It inspires hope in the face of daunting challenges.  It’s mythical in all senses of the word.  Thank you Don.
