| ANNUAL JURIED EXHIBITION – SPECTRUM, April 17 – May 22, 2005
New Canaan, CT - The New Canaan Society for the Arts presents SPECTRUM, its annual juried art exhibition from April 17 through May 22 at the Carriage Barn Arts Center in Waveny Park. The opening reception and awards presentation will be on Sunday, April 17th from 4 to 6 pm. The presentation of awards will be at 5 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. This year’s juror is Douglas K.S. Hyland, Director of the New Britain Museum of American Art, in New Britain, CT, the oldest museum of American art in the country. Dr. Hyland organizes exhibitions highlighting the extensive permanent collection of 5,000 oils, watercolors, drawings, graphics and sculptures representing three centuries of American art. In addition, he presents visiting exhibitions every year including the work of emerging and established contemporary artists in the NEW/NOW gallery. The Museum is currently undergoing a $26 million expansion of its facility located next to the historic Walnut Hill Park designed by renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted. The project includes a new 40,000 square foot building, renovation of the original 1907 house, endowments for programming, conservation, and maintenance, as well as education programs and a café. 90 paintings, drawings, graphics, mixed media works, and sculpture by 77 artists were selected by Dr. Hyland from among 280 works submitted by 173 artists. "Overall I'm delighted with the variety. There are strong entries in every category. And I think it is a very, very difficult show to judge," Dr. Hyland commented. He added, "In particular, I think the mixed media works are a very strong group and it was very difficult to choose. The collages and various other works are very thought provoking." Cecelia Barnett, exhibition curator said, "NCSA is grateful to all the artists who submitted work for Spectrum. It is always rewarding to have an excellent turn out that impresses a juror. Dr. Hyland was also very complimentary about the Carriage Barn itself and its exceptional gallery space, so the community should be quite pleased with the artistic achievements and with the unique venue their continuing support makes possible."
